Camp is different. That’s what makes it special. There is no doubt that our society has changed dramatically over the past generation. Camp has changed too, but I believe there has never been a greater contrast between the daily lives of children and their experiences at Camp. I’m going to throw some numbers at you, but don’t stop reading. You’re part of the good news.
In a normal week, the average American youth spends 574 minutes on the phone, 560 minutes playing video games, and just 42 minutes playing outside (Kaiser Family Foundation Study). During their week at Camp, those same kids spend ZERO minutes on the phone and video games, and they spend about 1,200 minutes playing outside.
California State University reports that youth spend an average of just 3 ½ minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their parents. At camp, the “family unit” is the cabin group—one adult with 6-8 campers. Every mealtime is shared in face-to-face conversation, every day begins with a discussion about meaningful topics of life and how the Bible applies, and every evening concludes with bedtime prayers. Every day, every child is told that they are loved, and every day we prove it to them.
This summer 600 kids will spend a combined total of 4,392,000 minutes at SMCC. That’s a lot of minutes that add up to a lot of impact, and you can help make it happen. Through the generosity of people like you, South Mountain Christian Camp will bring 420 kids to Camp this summer who cannot afford their camp fees. For just $205, you can sponsor a child in need to attend Camp. Together, we can break through to this electronic generation to share with them the good news of Jesus Christ and His incredible love for them.
