Lighting the Fire

Some things have to be done ahead of time. When we have campfire nights during summer camp, we don't wait for the kids to arrive before we light the fire. We want that fire blazing when they show up. That means it has to be lit fifteen minutes before the campers even head in that direction.

Likewise, summer camp starts in six months, but the preparation has already begun. When you’ve got 600 kids coming your way, you can’t just wait for warm weather before you get ready. This summer, we’ll serve over 12,000 meals, lead 360 games and activities, and conduct 60 chapel services. We’re already at work recruiting staff members, writing chapel services, and getting camper registrations ready to launch.

We’ve got some great new things planned for this year. We’re building an outdoor classroom which will serve as a campfire space for our youngest campers. We’re developing a wilderness camping program which will take select campers backpacking in the mountains. We’re adding some outdoor recreation spaces to accommodate the increased number of campers we’ve been serving lately. And, we’re moving forward with our Multi-Purpose Building project which will enable us to reach even more campers in the future.

Of course, all of this work is done to give children the chance to experience God. None of the activities, the meals, or even the chapel services mean anything unless these campers encounter Jesus here. Camp is much more than fun and games. It is an opportunity for hearts to be touched and lives to be changed. That’s why all of our plans are submitted to the Lord. We want His will, not ours.

Every aspect of camp requires funding, and our supporters step up every year to allow us to continue this important work. That's why they are essential partners with us in this ministry. They might not have the opportunity to light the campfire this summer, but they are right there with us in spirit when these campers experience the Lord.
