I Love That Place
“South Mountain Christian Camp! I love that place!”
This outburst was so unexpected, I found myself momentarily speechless. Mikel (our program director) and I were attending a community meeting last month centered around reaching the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of youth. The exclamation came in the middle of the first session from a man who recognized the South Mountain logo on Mikel’s shirt.
“I went to that camp when I was a kid,” he continued. “That camp is the best!”
As soon as we had a break, Mikel and I asked him about his time at SMCC. We discovered that he had attended summer camp every year as a child.
“I remember all the chapel lessons, the songs we sang…my friends and I would stand up on the chairs to sing it out loud. I still have those same friends, and we still talk about camp to this day. I even got baptized at that camp!”
Then his wife approached, and he introduced her to us. She smiled said, “He talks about South Mountain all the time, like it was yesterday.”
As the conversation continued, I learned that he was now the pastor of a local church in our community, dedicated to reaching out to the poor, broken, and afflicted with the hope of Jesus Christ. Pastor Godfrey’s heart is to minister to those who are often overlooked by society. He not only shares the Gospel in his church, but they also provide food, blankets, and winter coats for those in need.
Pastor Godfrey is changing his community, and his journey started at South Mountain Christian Camp.
The young people at camp this summer will be the pastors, teachers, and leaders of tomorrow. That's why this work is so important.
