Father to the Fatherless

Randy was angry. He thought he was upset about the basketball game he was playing with the other campers, but when his cabin director pulled him aside to talk, Randy began to open up about the anger he had toward his father. Randy had not seen his dad since he was three years old. The void was like an open wound, and the slightest irritation triggered outbursts of anger.

Over the years, we’ve ministered to thousands of kids just like Randy. Some have fathers who are incarcerated; others are separated from their fathers by divorce, drug addiction, or death. Some have seen their fathers walk out on the family, while others have never known their fathers at all. In every case, the pain is real, and the cure is the unconditional love of Father God.

Last month I had the opportunity to attend a summit with camp leaders from all over the United States who have a heart for reaching kids who are fatherless. The event was organized by a ministry called Psalm68five, inspired by this verse, “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.”

It was wonderful to connect with other camp leaders who have the same passion to reach these kids with the love of God. We shared and received ideas and resources, and we encouraged one another to continue this important work in the kingdom of God.

Throughout the Bible, we read time and again that God cares for the fatherless and desires that we do the same. During Randy’s week at South Mountain Christian Camp, he discovered the love of God. He received forgiveness in his life, and he forgave his own father. As a result, Randy found peace; and Father God filled the void, healing his broken heart.

When you support South Mountain Christian Camp, you touch the heart of God, reaching out to those who so desperately need a Father who loves them.
