A Special Place

South Mountain Christian Camp is a special place. You can sense it the moment to set foot on the grounds. We serve an omnipresent God who abides everywhere, but His Spirit works in exceptional ways on this property.

So many people have had life-changing experiences here. I can show you the tree where a pastor in our community gave his life to Jesus when he was a camper. I can point out the bench where I first led a camper to the Lord 25 summers ago and the steps where a little girl with no parents first embraced God as her Father. The list goes on and on.

Last month, Stacy Campbell, a former camper, wrote a beautiful thank you note to SMCC explaining the impact that it had on her life when she was a teen. I asked if she would read her note on video so that we could share it with all of you. I set up a camera at the girls’ cabin site, provided a chair for Stacy, and she began reading.

When she reached the point in her note where her cabin leader led her to the Lord under a tree near the girls’ campfire, Stacy stopped. Overcome with emotion, she pointed to a tree ten feet away from where she was seated. This was the tree! This is the spot where she surrendered to Christ on a dark summer night. This is the place where her life was changed forever.

“You guys don’t even know…,” she said through her tears. “My life could have been so horrible.” But it wasn’t horrible, because Jesus stepped into Stacy’s life under that inconspicuous oak tree surrounded by little brown cabins. Her life was changed right here at South Mountain Christian Camp. Today, she is happily married with a beautiful little girl.

These life-changing moments don't begin on the bench or under the oak tree. They begin with our supporters. They are the ones who enable South Mountain Christian Camp to provide kids like Stacy with the opportunity attend summer camp, regardless of their ability to pay. They are the first step in a beautiful journey that makes an eternal difference. Stacy’s thank you note was written to all of our staff, but it was written to those supporters too. And, by the way, you’ll be able to watch Stacy’s video next month on South Mountain Christian Camp’s YouTube channel.
