Growing the Team

Last month was an exciting one at South Mountain Christian Camp. After six weeks of searching, we hired a new facilities manager to oversee maintenance on camp. Mark Oettinger has an extensive skill set and a real heart for camp ministry. He and his wife, Jill, will be moving here with their three kids in June—just before summer camp begins.

Due to the nature of the job (being on call 24 hours a day when campers are here), we provide staff housing in the form of a three-bedroom mobile home on camp. Unfortunately, the house was in need of extensive repairs, and, without a facilities manager, we were already short-staffed. Several members of our team chipped in to do what we could to fix the place up, but it soon became apparent that the task was more than we could accomplish on weekends and evenings. I prayed earnestly that God would send someone who could help us get the house ready for the Oettinger family.

Meanwhile, our friends Ken and Ada Powell had been planning to come from Florida for a short visit. When they arrived, they told me that they would like to help out around camp if we needed any extra hands. This was welcome news. After I showed them the house, they excitedly took on the project and even made plans to extend their stay for an additional four weeks. Ken and Ada built their own home years ago and have just the skills needed to get the place back in shape. What a blessing! Along the way, other volunteers have come to help out with mowing, repairs, and construction in other areas of the camp. It’s been amazing to see how the Lord is providing the help we need before the Oettingers arrive.

The South Mountain Christian Camp ministry team is more than just our seven year-round staff members. It’s more than the thirty-two staff members who will join us this summer. Our ministry team includes all the volunteers who help out and it includes our supporters who give so generously. God has put this team together, and every member is important.
