The day gets started off right with breakfast at 8:30 am. Our cafeteria staff have been up early to fix some of your favorites--eggs, bacon, biscuits, and grits are among the most popular items. There’s also a variety of cold cereal in case you’re extra hungry.
After breakfast, it’s back to the cabin for cleanup. The Assistant Directors will be coming around later for inspection, and the cleanest cabins will be rewarded at lunch. Maybe today you’ll do a little decorating to make a good impression.
Next up is cabin devotions. Your cabin director might take your group to the prayer garden, down to the lake, or to their favorite spot in the woods. Here you’ll have a short discussion about issues that matter to you, and your cabin director will show you what the Bible has to say about that topic.
Now that your food has settled, it’s time for some activities. You cabin group might visit Joy Center. Here you can play basketball or volleyball, climb the rock wall, play air hockey, foosball, Gockey, or Corn Hole in the game room, or go upstairs to do some arts and crafts.
Or maybe your group will do some outdoor activities this morning. You might go to the low ropes course to do some teamwork challenges. You might go to the ball fields to play soccer, kickball, or field hockey. Maybe you’ll take a hike to the top of Cherry Mountain, or explore the creek along the Kentucky Trail. Outdoors is our specialty, and the possibilities are endless!
Soon, though, you’ll start feeling hungry, and it will be time for lunch. The clean cabin awards will be presented; then we’ll head inside the air-conditioned cafeteria for refueling. Lunch is typically something like hamburgers, hotdogs, or pizza with plenty of side items too.
Now it’s getting hot outside, but that’s okay because it’s swim time! At the pool, our lifeguards will be on duty to make sure everyone has a fun, safe time. We’ll serve snacks from the canteen area, and if you want to take a break from swimming, there’s plenty of games to play under the shelter.
It’s been a full day already, but we’ve got lots more to come. To make sure you’re ready for it, we’ll take a rest time each afternoon. Your cabin director might have you grab a quick nap or just relax and chat quietly with your cabin mates as you play a game of cards.
Supper is served at 5:30 each evening. Be ready for chicken strips, spaghetti, BBQ sandwiches, or other food that kids typically love. And eat up, because we’ve got a busy evening planned.
We’ll assemble on the ball fields next (older kids on one field, younger kids on another) for some all-camp games like capture the flag, star wars, and more. These large-group games are fun times when lots of cabin groups can join together in one massive contest!
Next we’ll have chapel. For many campers this is the highlight of the day. Funny skits, games, videos, singing, object lessons, and stories all make chapel a fun, interactive experience that teaches important lessons from the Bible. And if you memorize the week’s key verse, you can win some candy!
When chapel is over, we’ll have a snack prepared for you. Then you’ll have a little bit of free time before the cabin director leads you back to the cabin to prepare for bed. It’s been a big day, but we’ve got to get some rest because another one just like it is coming up tomorrow!
So there you have it—a typical day at South Mountain. In addition to all these great things, we also have special events planned throughout the week. Depending on your age group, you might experience the farm trip, the high ropes course, talent show, boating, night swim, campfire, or the giant swing!
On Friday mornings, we have a baptism service for campers who have accepted Jesus into their hearts as Savior and Lord and wish to be baptized here at camp. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the baptism service, you can easily indicate so on the Camper Application.
